Any person who is considering a career as a Home Health Aide already probably knows that acquiring the education they will need can be realized in several different ways. Most people pursue their training to become a Home Health aide through a community college even though some hospitals do offer this kind of special training as well. Once the training has been obtained, it is necessary for the potential worker to take a formal examination in order to become licensed.
The Nurse’s Aide Assessment Program is the main examination that must be taken to become a Home Health aide in the United States. This exam is comprised of three different sections which are both written, oral and clinical. Every year, there are more than one million hopeful home health aides who sit for this exam.
The written exam is made up of multiple-choice questions which deal with many different topics. Home Health aide certification (hha certification) candidates are allowed to give the oral examination in either Spanish or English. This part of the exam is made up of ten questions and a number of multiple choice questions.
Each Home Health aide student will be required to take a skills test during which they will be required to demonstrate their skills in a clinical setting that has been simulated. This part of the exam is evaluated by proctors who assess their skills and expertise in the practical matters that every Home Health aide is required to master.
Once a student has passed this examination, there are another 250 certification programs that are available to those who have completed successfully the 9 or 12 months of formal education required for every Home Health aide certification (hha certification). Passing this examination allows the candidate’s name to be added to the nurse’s aide registry of whatever state the live in. After joining the state registry, they are then permitted to renew their certification annually.
Above and beyond the requirements specified by the federal government for Home Health aides working in nursing homes or rehabilitation facilities every state has its own separate home health aide certification requirements. Certification examinations are usually supervised by the state Board of Nursing program.
Most states also require that all Home Health aides be in good physical health and have no criminal record. They also require that aides be drug-free and some health care facilities enforce this by requiring random drug testing. In this regard, many states require that all Home Health aides undergo a health screening and a police background check. Every Home Health aide must maintain their license from year to year and renew it before expiration.
In addition to all these onerous requirements, people who wish to work in this field must also possess certain personality traits. They must be compassionate and caring and have enough patience to deal with the repetitive nature of their work. They must also possess an unswerving desire to work as a front line member of the medical team of which they will be a part. This is because most Home Health aides interact with patients even more than doctors or nurses.
